While half of the UK is closing hatches for two months, the highstreet is facing its own problems. There are strong arguments that increasing urban sprawl and urban developments are creating the floods that many now face each year.

Has the distribution sector created its own storm through intensive outsourcing of production, resulting in ever more complex and complex supply chains and delays in production? considerable execution?

One of the iconic images of the floods last year was the owner of the Somerset home who built dikes around his house and, in doing so, kept the floodwaters at bay. The same thing was not possible in places like Boscastle where entire communities were destroyed. The individual with the creative mind and resources to respond to the rising waters has been able to do so, but cities and villages with massive resources are unable to save themselves.

Looking at the big-name retailers who are reporting disappointing results this winter, the same big players are coming to the market. Their buyers will have confirmed the summer winter stock with containers taking 6-8 weeks to arrive in the UK, meanwhile the Met Office has warned of a hot and humid winter and yet the high street was powerless to react.

This year's winners have not been announced yet but I would bet that they are flexible and innovative retailers able to quickly adapt to trends and conditions, with those who are ## 147 ## ###################################################################### They supply locally and do not have the same surplus deadlines. It is usually ecommerce businesses and small retailers that can stock stock in warehouses and quickly change the online offer rather than engaging on window displays and exit themes.

So, how do big players avoid falling into the same trap from year to year?

They can not be as flexible as fast fashion retailers, but since we live in the UK, an unexpected time should be expected. More flexible inventory management at the local level will allow individual stores to generate their own sales. Merchandisers should have plans in place to increase basic target items that will not be affected by weather conditions – Christmas jumpers at H & M, for example. Take advantage of NDCs and offer a broader product range; using click and collect as a buffer for localized shortages.

Just a few ideas; I am not Steve Rowe. I anticipate however to pick up ski gear at a discount in a few months.
