Flat roofs are completely different from sloping roofs. Water can run down sloping roofs and down to the sewer. But this is not the case on flat roofs. The entire flat roof must have a waterproof layer so that the water can not cross the roof and cause leaks in the house. But like the sloping roof, flat roofs can be damaged and require roof repairs. It's a good thing that you can do roof repair on flat roofs, as long as you know how. How do you do? Here's how.
The first thing you should do is prepare the items you will need for the roof repair. Get a mallet, roofing nails, putty knife, utility knife, brooms and roofing cement. These are all the materials needed to repair your flat roof.
To start repairing the roof, go to your roof and locate the problems. If you find peeled areas or fractures, do the following: Get rid of dust and dirt on the roof by using the broom. The roofing cement can not stick on dirty surfaces, that is why you have to make sure that the whole area is clean. Now, cut a shape on the area where the fracture or skin has been discovered. If there are multiple fractures or peels, use the same shapes for uniformity. Use the cut shape to create a pattern on the replacement shingles. The size and shape you create on the replacement shingle must be precise. If you made a mistake on the size, create several replacement shingles so that the shingles can be at the same level as the area that is there. Make another replacement shingle. This one must be at least 2 inches taller than the other shingles.
Put the putty knife in the edge area. Put roofing cement under the edges. Now, attach the shingle to the hole and nail it. Cement the shingle. If you use multiple shingles to level the area, the other shingles should not be cemented. Just hammer it with nails. Cut down the largest replacement shingle on the area and put roofing cement on its edges for the joint.
If there are split shingles on your flat roof, then you have to do a different method. First, cut the shingle in half. Open the cut area and put roofing cement on it. Use roofing nails to secure the sides of the shingles. Add a replacement shingle using a method similar to that described for repairing fractured areas.
Repairing the roof of your flat roof must now be done. You are now protected from water leaks while waiting. Check your roof regularly to keep it and avoid leaks.
