The Advantages and Disadvantages of Being Selfless

In my previous article, I looked at some of the advantages and disadvantages of being selfish. In this article, I will take a look at the flip side of the coin, the pros and cons of being an altruist.

The Advantages of Being an Altruist

Most of the benefits you gain from your selflessness are inner benefits. It is really good to be able to help people in bad shape. Sometimes the least benevolent action or word can make a big difference in someone's life.

Another thing to consider is that by being selfless and helping others, you build good karma. For those who do not like the term karma, you can think of it as a simple cause and effect. If you do a lot of good, you can expect that it will be returned to you. The same goes for evil, doing a lot of bad things will catch you sooner or later. You reap what you sow.

Perhaps one of the most beautiful benefits you can benefit from being altruistic is there the chance to meet other selfless people and to patronize them. In general, selfish people do not spend their time helping others. It is much easier to have friendships, partnerships and mutually beneficial and satisfying relationships with people who care about you and not just themselves.

The drawbacks of being a selfless man

Unfortunately, being unselfish is not just a puppy and a rainbow. . You will have to deal with selfish people who take advantage of your kindness. In some cases, helping a person once requires that person to wait for you to do whatever they want, when they want it. When you must inevitably tell them no, they become very angry.

Even people who are not selfish can try to monopolize your time and energy, sometimes unwittingly. They might just really appreciate your company and the good feelings you give them, so they want to be around you as much as possible. Usually, a light but firm reminder that there are other people and that your obligations will take care of this problem.

Another possible disadvantage may come from the fact that you are so selfless that you think ONLY of others and neglect your own needs. You must remember to take care of yourself so that you can continue to help others.

The Bottom Line

In my opinion, the benefits of being an altruistic person far outweigh the disadvantages. As long as you remember to defend yourself and take care of yourself, becoming a more selfless person will help to improve the world of our world.
